BUV uses SumoSprings
Basic Utility Vehicle Non-Profit Organization to use SumoSprings

Rural communities across the world with less access and resources depend on basic transport to transform lives. When a rural community gets connected with a Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV), it can change almost everything. From access to healthcare, food, and marketplaces, to giving children in those communities better access to school and education, BUVs change lives.

As of December 2022, SuperSprings International has been supporting the Indianapolis-based non-profit organization with suspension components for all BUVs now built and shipped worldwide.

"The BUV has been designed from the ground up to be rugged, affordable, and easy to operate and maintain."
- Will Austin, Institute for Affordable Transportationā€™s Executive Director

Institute for Affordable Transportationā€™s Executive Director, Will Austin, shared ā€œThe BUV has been designed from the ground up to be rugged, affordable, and easy to operate and maintain. Our partnership with SSI delivers a superior design for our suspension. The SumoSpring offers us many advantages including increased driver comfort, enhanced durability, and long life which allows BUVs to deliver hope in the developing world through rural transport.ā€

Will and his team provide a simple, low cost, and highly practical vehicle that is entirely based on the needs of the community it serves. That means a solution with longevity and durability as primary focuses where the vehicle is as tough as the terrain itā€™s made for. BUVs are designed for a wide range of countries so there are varying needs and solutions that make sense. One country may need to have something like a truck bed to haul food and water to communities that live tens of miles from the source. In another, the greatest need is getting crafted goods and crops to market in order for the community to create a revenue stream.

The vision of the BUV team is to create a literal vehicle to aid commerce and a higher standard of living. In these communities, for every dollar invested in basic mobility, thereā€™s a potential yield of between $4-$8 in economic returns. These BUVs are as simple as they come ā€“ in most cases a very simple steel frame, 3 wheels, a basic diesel engine, a single seat for the driver, and a way to carry people and products. Thatā€™s it. By keeping it simple, Will and his team are making it possible for those they serve to own and easily repair a tool that gives access to better living.

"Will and the team are enriching the lives of those that donā€™t have easy access to vehicles like we do here in the US and weā€™re proud to be a small part of that."
ā€” Adam Weisner, SSI President

Speaking on the partnership, SSI President, Adam Weisner commented, ā€œMore than anything else at SSI, weā€™re passionate about people and making lifeā€™s journey better for everyone however we can. This is engrained in the fabric of our company, and supporting an incredible organization like BUV is an honor. Will and the team are enriching the lives of those that donā€™t have easy access to vehicles like we do here in the US and weā€™re proud to be a small part of that.ā€
